Located on the Lazio side of the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise, closer to the border with Abruzzo, there is the small and pretty town of Campoli Appennino<\/b>, overlooking an impressive karst basin, known as Tomolo, where houses are developed along a loop on the edge of the basin, a feature that makes it quite unique in Lazio region; at the back of the town of Campoli \u2013 whose name comes from the Latin campora, the land cultivated on the mountain \u2013 stands Italian central-south Apennines.<\/p>

Even though the information about the origin of the town is not certain, being traditionally dated back to the time of Count Gandolfo of Sora and Aquino<\/b>, after the Longobard destruction of the 7th century, Campoli shows a clear medieval structure in its tower, in the walls and in the picturesque streets of the town centre. conte Gandolfo di Sora e Aquino<\/b> dopo la distruzione longobarda del VII secolo \u2013 Campoli presenta una chiara struttura medievale nella torre, nella cinta muraria e negli spazi caratteristici del centro.<\/p>

You can start your walk right from the medieval tower, the symbol of the town and its oldest building: built by the Lombards, the tower was later owned by the dukes Cantelmo from Alvito<\/b> in the 14th century, who are represented in bas-relief of the coat of arms depicting the family symbol of the rampant lion, which can be seen on the south facade of the tower; used in the last century as a water tank, today the tower is a place of cultural interest accessible through guided tours.<\/p>

Walking away from the tower and along the walls of the town hall, a maze of small alleys guides you to the discovery of the old buildings and the views from the walls, towards Porta Suso<\/b> to enjoy the view opening onto the west; from there you can walk back to Piazza Umberto I, crossing Via Campo dei Fiori with its portals and characteristic spots.<\/p>

At short walk from the square there is the Church of Saint Andrew the Apostle<\/b>, with its baroque lines on a medieval architecture: inside, besides the altar and the artistic works, you can awe in gaze at the characteristic Venetian-style mosaic floor made of the \"gravel of Campoli\" (breccia di Campoli), dating back to 1881, and the chapel dedicated to the Holy Family where to contemplate the 19th-century canvas, from an unknown author, in which San Felice the martyr is portrayed in the act of donating the town to God, a picture showing us how Campoli Apennines was at the time.<\/p>

Going back to the karst basin, from the observation point in Piazza Umberto I<\/b>, you can view the Bear Wildlife Area below<\/b>, where European brown bears that can no longer live free are hosted since 2010, thanks to a project developed by the municipality and the National Park: you just need to walk along the path around the sinkhole to observe Piero, Sonia and Leone, the three bears currently living in the area.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Following the borders of the karst basin along Via Borgo Loreto and Via Borgo Costa you will reach Colle San Pancrazio<\/b>, a hill where, about one kilometre from the town centre, there is the church dedicated to the patron saint of the town; according to the legend, the church was built on a votive chapel dating back to 1521 and located where the martyr appeared to a shepherdess. Inside the church there is a wooden statue of San Pancrazio, dating back to 1804, which is carried in a solemn procession every year through the streets of the town on May 12th.<\/p>

Before leaving Campoli Appennino, a visit is worth to be paid to the oldest part of the town, where history and nature mingles, starting from another extraordinary attraction in the area, Vallone Lacerno, a canyon incredibly rich in plants and animals and offering breath-taking landscapes. Here you can keep walking to reach the waterfalls located deep in the gorge, \"Cuccetto dell'Inferno\"<\/b>, and then visit the archaeological finds dating back to the Roman age, in particular the aqueduct of Nero \u2013 which was actually built by the Roman Emperor Ottaviano \u2013 which follows the stream along its left bank crossing it towards the right bank, located in the municipality of Pescosolido.<\/p>

On the way from Campoli Appennino to the town of Posta Fibreno you cannot but stop and enjoy the shade of the ancient mill built on the springs of Carpello stream<\/b>, so called because of the abundance of carps (Carp = Carpa in Italian) in its waters and whose fish fauna still shows no decrease; an abundance known since Roman times, as proved by a mosaic found in the 1970s nearby the area, depicting jumping fish.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
